So I like an adventure every now and then. In fact, life gets just too boring without a few adventures. But then, sometimes adventures get at little out of hand...
Last night Bruce and I went down to camp to pick up his motorcycle. Sounds simple, right? Well... did I mention that this motorcycle had a dead battery and quite often refuses to start? So we brought a new battery, and spent some time trying to get it all connected (meanwhile it was getting darker, and darker.) Of course, the bike was in the back corner of camp, so it was pitch black. What's a girl to do but share some of her headlight illumination? I figured it would only be a few minutes- I sit in my car for hours at a time listening to the radio while waiting for the ferry, and my battery has always held up just fine.
We finally got the battery in (ok, I didn't really do anything to help except hold a couple of bolts.) Bruce started it up. Well, ok, so he tried. It made a few whiny noises, which we were kind of expecting, because what self-respecting motorcycle that has been sitting next to a shed for three months would start on the first try? Bruce rolled it down the road a ways and tried to compression start it. He kept getting farther and farther, so I told him I'd just meet him at the bottom. I walked back to my car, which was now surrounded by inky blackness. I put in the key, cranked it and ... nothing. It made a few clicking noises, and the headlights came on weakly... I tried a few more times, and the engine sounded like it was thinking about starting, but then nothing. Finally, I decided I no longer wanted to be in the dark woods by myself, especially since my windows were down and yeah, they're electric.
I hiked out of the woods and caught up to Bruce. He looked at me like "Where is your car?" I said, "This just turned in to a new kind of adventure."
So at this point, we have two vehicles, both with out power. Luckily, his was about to start. He drove, I walked the short distance to the garage, where he was sure there was a jumper. Somewhere. We poked around for a while, he called a few people to no avail. Finally we started out walking in search of someone who might have jumper cables. Pretty quickly we found this guy called "Whirly" who is the water sports director or something, and he got up from his movie to help us. He went to get his truck, which was wayyyy down by the waterfront, and we hiked back up the hill to my car. I got in, put in the key and said, "See, this is what it sounds like" To which Delores replied, "VROOM!!!" Oh yeah, she started on the first try. Go figure. So then we waited for five minutes or so for Whirly to make it up to where we were, only to tell him "nevermind." I hate doing that! Needless to say, we felt awful.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the fun part where Bruce mentioned that his bike was almost totally out of gas! So we had to make a detour to the gas station, with the provision that if it died, we might have to push it the rest of the way! Luckily, we made it, and that was the end of the adventures, but what a night!

WOW!!!!! What a great story! I'm glad it all turned out okay and you can laugh about it! Please post a photo of Bruce on the motorcycle--I can only imagine!!!
I guess there IS something good about manual windows. yikes!
glad you guys are OK..
wow...i bought jumper cables after my car died 3 times in the first few months I owned it. (Battery posts get corroded quickly.) Then after it died about 5 more times the first 2 months Jared was driving it (he forgets to turn the lights off just about EVERY SINGLE time he drives it) we decided to buy one of those jumper boxes that doesn't require another car to start it. Of course, the car hasn't died once in the past 3 months since we bought the thing.
